Battle Report: 500 Point Angry Marines vs. Imperial Guard

Hey folks!

My first foray back into battle reports in 8th edition starts with a friendly game against a friendly local.  I'm learning 8th edition and am not ready for tournaments with my super fluffy pure Space Marine (Angry Marines Counts as Ultramarines).

Hulksmash braved the wrath of the internet to help me put together a low model count, pure space marine army list, which you can find here!

I haven't come up with a fun name for my army yet; from Ghazgkhull's Harem to my Darklight Storm to the Garden of Silence and their horrifically effective close combat with their 3rd edition codex in 5th edition, so I'll take any suggestions.  The lore for these guys,  Techpriest-Captain Tempernius Irascus and the 3rd Company "FURY OF THE EMPRAH" Angry Marines is here.  I should hold a contest to who can come up with the best name.

Anyway, PREPARE FOR GLORY!  Bring your savage comments, I'm new to 8th, still learning the rules, and this is for you all to point out all the stuff I did wrong so I can git gud.

8th Edition and ANGRY MARINES

Fine 40k players, its been an age.  Seven years to be precise.  I haven't played Warhammer 40k since my career high of winning Best Sportsman at the Nova Open in 2011 - the crowning achievement of my Warhammer career.

I poked around in 6th edition, but the game was too confusing; too many armies, too many allies, Necrons allying with Orks, needing to buy 6 Ork books to even figure out how to build an army...nah.

And here we are again.  Colleagues of mine at work have been pestering me to get back into the game, and I've dipped my feet in.  Sadly, my armies are gone.  Models, armies, bits, battlefoam, GW cases....everything is gone, and I have virtually nothing to show for any of it so we're starting from scratch!  I'm hopefully understandably upset.  Very upset.  One might even say..ANGRY!!

I'd originally planned on recreating a full on Drukhari army and learning to play with my favorite army, but after a 113 minute phone conversation with Hulksmash, where we caught up on frappacinos, wives, kids, armies, and who likes balls in their mouth more (its still up for debate, since I ate some fine sake-infused plums this evening), I realized that this blog isn't "They Shall Know Fear" because we hate space marines.  When I first looked at 8th edition, my first thought was, "Gotta pick one of the Xenos races."  Looking at tournament reports, its Eldar.  Dark Eldar.  The Dead versions of them.  Some other stuff...but my once weak and pitiful Dark Eldar are near the top of the food chain now, and the armies I loathe - Space Marines - whom I loathed because 9/10 tournament games were destined to be rinse and repeat netlists of Space Wolves, Grey Knights, and Blood Angels - are no longer on the top of the food chain.

Matt Ward must have been fired or have discovered Hentai, because the Space Marine codex is not masturbatory material this time around.  Then it struck me!  I didn't hate Space Marines, I hated flavor of the month armies...and since Space Marines are out of favor, and I love playing the underpowered underdog, I need to play Space Marines!!

Specifically, I need to play some very angry, vengeful space marines.

I need some maximum carnage, angry marines.  Assault cannons are too simple.  Not when an angry marine can carry those.  Dual wielding assault cannons.  With chainblades on them just in case the opportunity to cut down a flier shows up.

Hulksmash has given me an initial army list, I've started sourcing the models, Mrs. Dash has stocked up on paints and paintbrushes, and we're getting ready to go to war.

ORKS and WTF GHAZGHKULL!?!

The very first thing I did upon deciding to jump back into the hobby was to purchase the new Ork Codex.  Bear in mind that I'm still hazy on post-5th Edition rules, so correct me where I'm wrong, but let's jump into this particular rant.

7th Edition, First Impressions

I went up to my FLGS today to do some re-learning of Warhammer 40k, and perused my shiny new Ork Codex!   Keep in mind that I skipped 6th edition, so I'm really drawing parallels between 5th Edition and 7th Edition.  Observations and questions below, and PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GANDALF correct anything I've misunderstood.

A Dash of Ork

Greetings one and all!

While I haven't picked up a model or played a game since 2012 in the prime of 5th Edition, I haven't forgotten about the hobby.  To the contrary, I put down models and the competitive aspect of Warhammer to immerse myself in the universe.  I own every Horus Heresy novel from the Black Library, quite a few Omnibuses...I've always enjoyed reading Codices, but this deep immersion into the 31st Millenium has been quite nice.

I’m Gonna Stab the Next Person Who Suggests Altering 7th the First Week!

There, I said it. I’m going to stab the next person online with my magic internet knife that suggests altering 7th edition before we even play the damn game.

Oh yeah, I’m back by the way :)

7th re-ignited my excitement for the game and most of the….posts?...that are circulating about it make me sad. Remember, I’m a tournament player due to my availability so everything on here is pretty much from that perspective.

Recent Stuff and a Possible Bugeater 1850 List

Some of you might have wondered where I went and others of you might not have noticed J

Well as you guys can tell the blog has become a place where I tend to write some stuff and then disappear for a while. Not gonna apologize for it but I’m going to actively at least try to post something once every other week or so.

So in the last two months I've won best painted at a 60+ plus person GT and come in second overall. I've come in first overall in another 60+ person GT. Oh, and we won the Adepticon Team Tournament for the second year in a row. First team to ever do it back to back which is pretty sweet. I’ve personally been pretty busy outside of that getting my Adepticon personal army up and running as well as building a display board and starting on my Titan I had planned to use for the Gladiator. I’ll get some pictures up of both and you can see photos of my army over in the “Our Armies” tag.

Daemons w/Chaos Allies - 1850

So yesterday I posted up a pure Daemon army and I promised that I’d get an allied army up today for today so here you guys go. It’s a starting place for me but I like it.

Pure Daemons: My First Go – 1850

So following up my article yesterday and after some more reading of my book here is a starting point for my pure Daemons following the wave approach I advocated yesterday:

So....Daemons.....Yeah, They're Awesome

Now this goes the other way!

Well I picked up the Daemon codex this weekend while I was at the Indy Open but didn't get to much of a chance to really dig into it. But we had quite a bit of discussion on the way home last night about it and I've spent a fair amount of today reading and playing with it in my mind so I figured I'd share my initial thoughts.

Indy Open & My Army

Well I made it back from Indy without crashing and just ahead of the snow. I figured I'd share some photos of my army and how I did at the tournament with you guys.

You can find my army list here: http://hulksmash-homeplace.blogspot.com/2013/03/indy-open-this-weekend-initial-thoughts.html

Indy Open this Weekend & Initial Thoughts on Upcoming Daemons

Well I left this morning at 530am for a 10-12 hour drive down to Indianapolis for the second Indy Open. I’m cruising down with some local players so it should be a fun trip.

This is what I decided on bringing for the event. For those that don’t know it’s a 1750pt GT that caps out at 64 players.

I managed to get it all painted up in the last three weeks (to be fair 28 of the IG were done before that). Haven’t had time to make an updated board for them though so it’s the same battle foam board I’ve had for the last year. I’ll be building my display now that my army is done and should have it done and pictures up before the Dark Star GT in two weeks.

Imperial Guard w/Chaos Allies – 1,850

Here is a little something I’m playing with lately. It’s still in its rough stages but I think it has some potential.

Vehicles and Transports in 6th Edition

I mentioned last week in my I’m back article how I thought that people had overreacted and that vehicles and transports still had a place in armies in 6th. Well I’m about to share with you my reasoning! Prepare to be amazed! (Or not, I won’t be offendedJ).

Angel Exterminatus – Book Review

As you can tell from my previous post I’m a bit of a Iron Warrior nut. I’ve been in love with Iron Warriors since the White Dwarf Index Astartes article back in 3rd edition. I built a large army of them and they managed to keep my attention consecutively for longer than any army has to date. So when I saw this book was being released I did a little jig. Even if it did include Fulgrim at least I was finally getting a book with my Primarch as the lead.

Then I found out it was only in hardback…..

Ok, that’s new to the Horus Heresy but it was bound to happen so I’m cool with that. Then it turned they had an E-book so that’s the direction I took. Anyway, onto the review:
